Blanche is Stellas younger sister who has come to visit Stella and her husband Stanley in New Orleans. After their first meeting Stanley develops a strong dislike for Blanche and everything associated with her. Among the things Stanley dislikes about Blanche are her spoiled-girl manners and her indirect and quizzical way of conversing. Stanley also believes that Blanche has conned him and his wife out of the family mansion. In his opinion, she is a good-for-nothing leech that has attached itself to his household, and is just living off him. Blanches lifelong habit of avoiding unpleasant realities leads to her breakdown as seen in her irrational response to death, her dependency, and her inability to defend herself from Stanleys attacks. Blanches situation with her husband is the key to her later behavior. She married rather early at the age of sixteen to whom a boy she believed was a perfect gentleman. He was sensitive, understanding, and civilized much like herself coming from an aristocratic background. She was truly in love with Allen whom she considered perfect in every way. Unfortunately for her he was a homosexual. As she caught him one evening in their house with an older man, she said nothing, permitting her disbelief to build up inside her. Sometime later that evening, while the two of them were dancing, she told him what she had seen and how he disgusted her. Immediately, he ran off the dance floor and shot himself, with the gunshot forever staying in Blanches mind. After that day, Blanche believed that she was really at fault for his suicide. She became promiscuous, seeking a substitute men (especially young boys), for her dead husband, thinking that she failed him sexually. Gradually her reputation as a whore built up and everyone in her home town knew about her. Even for military personnel at the near-by army base, Blanches house became out-of-bounds. Promiscuity though wasnt the only problem she had. Many of the aged family members died and the funeral costs had to be covered by Blanches modest salary. The deaths were long, disparaging and horrible on someone like Blanche. She was forced to mortgage the mansion, and soon the bank repossessed it. At school, where Blanche taught English, she was dismissed because of an incident she had with a seventeen-year-old student that reminded her of her late husband. Even the management of the hotel Blanche stayed in during her final days in Laurel, asked her to leave because of the all the different men that had been seeing there. All of this, cumulatively, weakened Blanche, turned her into an alcoholic, and lowered her mental stability bit-by-bit. Her husbands death affects her greatly and determines her behavior from then on. Having lost Allan, who meant so much to her, she needs to fill her empty heart, and so she turns to a lifestyle of one-night-stands with strangers. She tries to comfort herself from not being able to satisfy Allan, and so Blanche makes an effort to satisfy strangers, thinking that they need her and that she cant fail them like she failed Allan. At the same time she turns to alcohol to avoid the brutality of death. The alcohol seems to ease her through the memories of the night of Allans death. Donations such as, bone marrow, blood and blood components help enhance another’s life, while vital organs like the liver and kidney can save another’s life. Organ donation is a unique and controversial situation for each individual and their family involved. The controversy throughout the world related to organ donation has specifically been impacted by all aspects of ethical, legal, organizational and societal views. The two programs in debate are opt-in and opt-out programs. Even though the two programs are completely different in how they work the main goal would be to increase potential donors. Organ donation has been a wide spread controversial issue throughout the world, involving all aspects of ethical, legal, organizational and societal views. Most of the issues surrounding organ donation are consent and ways to increase potential donors to awaiting transplant recipients ratio. Given the lack of organ donors, not just in the UK but across the world, society needs to face up to the fact that, if we want more people to have transplant surgery, organ donation after death has to be discussed more openly (Tantam, 2007). Therefore the danger exists that the wealthy and powerful will miraculously appear at the top of the list whether they belong there or not. Much of the early criticism I found concentrated on Falstaff and so will I. This may begin in the eighteenth century with Samuel Johnson. For Johnson, the Prince is a "young man of great abilities and violent passions," and Hotspur is a "rugged soldier," but "Falstaff, unimitated, unimitable Falstaff, how shall I describe thee? Thou compound of sense and vice . . . a character loaded with faults, and with faults which produce contempt . . . a thief, a glutton, a coward, and a boaster, always ready to cheat the weak and prey upon the poor; to terrify the timorous and insult the defenceless . . . his wit is not of the splendid or ambitious kind, but consists in easy escapes and sallies of levity [yet] he is stained with no enormous or sanguinary crimes, so that his licentiousness is not so offensive but that it may be borne for his mirth."      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Johnson makes three assumptions in his reading of the play:      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   1. There are a number of emotions that a man goes through during the course of his lifetime. Most of them are experienced because of the kind of company he keeps, which further help him make his decisions and understand himself better. In The Alchemist, Coelho talks about the way a man should open himself up to both his mind as well as the heart because no right decision can arrive from only one place. He writes, â€Å"May love be y our guide in every part of your life.† (Coelho, Paulo) Through these lines, Coelho has tried to suggest how love comes from the heart of a person, which is the truest and purest emotion that can arise. The heart is that part of a man that lets him feel and think at the same time. It helps a man to understand what going through a situation might be like. The heart is the very aspect of a man that helps him make decisions based on his feelings. When a man says, ‘straight from the heart’ then he means to say that whatever it is that he is talking about is coming from his feelings and not from his mind. The mind on the other hand is where the rational thought process of a man persists. Thus, whatever decisions a man takes from his mind, is bound to be rational and feelings and emotions are not supposed to get in the way of the same. A decision taken from the mind consists of a sense of pragmatism that removes all possibility of understanding and taking into mind the e motions of those that depend on another person. Coelho writes, â€Å"At a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That's the world's greatest lie.† This very statement has been accounted for by the author as a notion coming from the mind of a person. It is the mind of a man that gives him reason to point wrongs and rights at everything that the individual might cross paths within during the course of his lifetime. Therefore, it is imperative for a man to be able to think with his heart and not just his mind. When we talk about the law and justice that must be given to each and everyone in society, we also must take into account their feelings. However, a man cannot go on depending upon his feelings because they might turn into negative vibes and cause havoc to the people around him. So it is important to gauge the mind of oneself and understand what lies within in order to then ask the heart for the right decision. Most people get an intuition or an inner feeling regarding a certain situation or circumstance that they might be caught up in. This feeling is the one that comes from the heart, however might not be the right thing to do sometimes. Â  Educational influence Educational issues appear to have influenced both Tony and Jo Tony refers to himself as being uneducated: And then I only went to school for a year, after I was eleven. Tony ex plains this was due to the years education he did receive: I had a very interesting year the years education I had was very interesting situation in at a boarding school in Sussex. And I think Methodist principles were fairly firmly entrenched. And Yes I think that has, that makes us to a certain extent the sort of people we are. In lines 81 82 Tony talks about which career paths were available to them and ones parents experiences and aspirations certainly entered into it as well In the second interview both Tony and Jo make reference to separation from their fathers because of the war, this appears to be a shared experience for both of them. Jo then compares this with their own childrens experience of separation, their children feared that Tony and Jo would separate like another family that they knew. Jo says that when the children are young it is important to make sacrifices or you adapt Line 122 Interests could be pursued later. She emphasizes this further if you want to nurture and encourage your children, then some one or other had got to stay, perhaps hold back a little to give as much as you can to your children Lines 145 148. Although Jo acknowledges that women have equal rights today in contrast with the past, she believes that in order to provide a nurturing role women should still put their children first. She also talks about the importance of stability for children children like stability. And its the stable base that you make around them that matters more Lines 154 -156 * Social/cultural/historical influence Historical influence has played a part in Jo and Tonys development, the war had a huge impact on them, their fathers went away and there was uncertainty as to whether they would return.
